Francis Hick’s and Thomas Tanner’s creation – Hastings

Hastings first sections to form a township went on sale on 8 July 1873.

In order to commemorate this event and Hastings 150th birthday – historian Michael Fowler will be taking a tour around the east side of the Heretaunga Street showing the locations and the history on the beginnings of this beautiful city.

Unlike Napier, Clive and Havelock – Hastings was never a planned town – it was originally the product of two men – Thomas Tanner and Francis Hicks.

Opportunistic Napier people purchased land speculatively – and a Napier newspaper speculated – would it one day be the capital of Hawke’s Bay ?

Must be able to comfortable walk around for up to 90 minutes.

Tour microphone ear pieces are used.
