Hawke's Bay Young Musician of the Year 2023 - Preliminary

We are celebrating the 40th year of the Hawke's Bay Young Musician of the Year! 

NOTE new start time of 11AM! 

The preliminary round of this event is a showcase of the superb talent of our young classical musicians competing for six finalist places. And the prelims are an excellent and affordable way for audiences to enjoy the upcoming young talent, including pianists, instrumentalists and singers. Starting at 11.00 am and going into the afternoon, this competition concert enables the audience to come and go as they need to between the competitors (max. 20-minute sessions), so can be a fun way for families to enjoy as much music as they like!

YMY encourages our advanced young musicians to prepare and perform their best recital of varied music in front of an adjudicator and an audience. And every year it's different with an outstanding high quality of music performed.

We are proud of the talented young people who have passed through the YMY event over 40 years, many of whom have gone on to successful music careers, teaching or performing, some internationally!

They are all students of IRMTNZ-HB registered music teachers who provide high-quality music tutoring and who work with over 2000 Hawke’s Bay children each year in schools, orchestras, bands, choirs and personal lessons.
