Stone quarry to five-star public gardens.
Thomas Nance, manager of the Quarry Gardens, will take you through the varied history of the 25-hectare site in the Western Hills of Whangārei. From a stone quarry developed in the 1940s by Hardie Brothers that supplied the district with roading aggregate, to five-star public gardens, created and managed by volunteers. Thomas will also talk about the challenges of maintaining a public garden on a difficult site with rock falls, fires, flooding and slips.
Free entry.
No booking is required. Seating is strictly limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
