ChatGPT has captured the public imagination, but where did it come from and where is the technology headed? We delve into the world of ChatGPT, the innovative AI language model from OpenAI. We'll explore its origins, functions, and reasons behind its widespread adoption.

We’ll also look at its limitations and compare it to other capable but less well-known large language models. Is ChatGPT fostering a decline in literacy, or is it simply steering us towards the natural evolution of written communication?

Reflecting on years of AI research at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, this talk will unpack the unfolding implications of ChatGPT on our textual culture.

About the speaker: Tom White (he/him) is a senior lecturer at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington School of Design. He teaches creative coding with machine learning and researches creative applications of neural networks.
