Joan Prior Awards Showcase

Songs6021, Acoustic Routes and The Newtown Festival are proud to present the Joan Prior Awards for Young Performers Showcase 2023.

The show will feature sets by 6 outstanding young acts across a range of styles.

Featured performers will be:
Catherine Bullock - Infusing folk with indie-pop melodies and alternative lyrics, Catherine Bullock is a Pōneke/Wellington based singer-songwriter destined to become your next favourite solo act.

Dee van Wel - Dee van Wel is a singer-songwriter based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. They gig regularly across Aotearoa independently and alongside their band Hearth. Their music is warm and authentic, comprised of a glittering guitar sound and flowing vocals.

My Cosmic Girl (duo) - With a contemporary take on the sounds of mid-century Americana Folk, My Cosmic Girl blends the finest elements of these decades with a gorgeous, modern sheen. Ella and Toby are representing the band in the form of a country-infused acoustic duo. Bursting with infectious energy, My Cosmic Girl has honest, simple lyricism and unforgettable hooks.

Abbey - As a performer, my passion lies in crafting songs that touch hearts. Through my soulful vocals, infectious beats, and relatable lyrics, I aim to create a sonic world where listeners find solace, joy, and connection. Join me in this musical voyage, as we dance through life’s emotions and celebrate the power of music together.

River Hann Ellen - River Hann-Ellen is the songwriter for local Wellington folk/indie rock band "Debt Club". Using lush and vibrant chord voicings that contrast with a plaintive yet sanguine lyrical style, River builds relevant and heartfelt tunes that tell stories of real-world experiences and explore peoples deep seeded emotions.

Fergus CD - Upbeat indie folk with a gothic twist. Inspired as much by the Romantic poetry I was force - fed as a child as by artists like Paul Simon, The Cure and The Beatles, my songs explore dark and deep emotional themes contrasted with bright pop-y energy.

Playing order will be randomised so get there early to be sure of seeing your favourites.

Door from 5:30pm, music from 6:30pm`
