1st - 31st March 2023

Monday - Saturday 10 - 4pm. Sundays 12 - 4pm but closed on Tuesdays

The 3 paintings in this exhibition were inspired by historic black and white studio portrait
photographs. The youth and beauty of these Maori girls captured my desire to paint them in a
contemporary style, using bold colours and mixed media. The backgrounds and colours used are
entirely my own design.

“The Greeting” - mixed media on canvas. 122cms x 90cms
I was inspired to paint this picture because of the sentiment evoked by the hongi between these two
young Maori women. I imagined it would have taken place in their marae, so the background
evolved with an impression of the carving associated with a wharenui. I chose to paint the
background crimson red as this symbolises the female element.
The fresh green traditional dress used along with the complimentary colour red , seem to vibrate
when used together.

“Mother and Baby”- mixed media on canvas 122cms x 90cms
I loved the smiling face of this young Mother. The bright green symbolising new beginnings and the
fresh outdoors seemed the perfect colour to use. I used lots of texture to help show off the richness
of her Kiwi feather cloak

“Poi” – mixed media on canvas 122cms x 90cms
This beautiful young girl with her poi over her shoulder seemed perfect to paint in front of the
majestic but distant Mt. Taranaki. I loved her huia hair feathers and the “movement” in her woven
flax dress, which I have captured using a variety of mixed media.
