'Ngā Mata o Te Marama' is an exhibition showcasing the phases of the moon pertaining specifically to the rohe (district) of Ngāti Tūwharetoa (local iwi/tribe). This mātauranga (traditional māori knowledge) has been generously passed down by the late Te Kanawa Pitiroi, a kaumatua of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and former kaumātua (elder) of this whare taonga. Taupō Museum are privileged to share the mātauranga in this exhibition thanks to the generosity of Te Ara Mātauranga ō Tūwharetoa. This exhibition reflects on traditional indigenous knowledge, and the journey to reclaim this whilst understanding its relevance to our unique, local landscape. We do this while also celebrating the future of education with mahi toi (art works) from local kura (school) and tamariki (children), ensuring the longevity of our mātauranga.
