Auckland writer Megan Nicol Reed’s first foray into fiction is One of Those Mothers, a raw domestic thriller that will hit the sweet spot for readers who enjoyed The Slap and Big Little Lies. It’s a gripping page-turner with razor-sharp writing and a ripped-from-the-headlines mystery featuring every parent's worst nightmare.

In her Sunday Star Times and New Zealand Herald columns, Megan has long delighted in sending up the bourgeoisie, and taking modern parental concerns and wringing the absurdity and mundanity out of them. One of Those Mothers continues in that vein, dissecting the petty obsessions of the moneyed classes, deconstructing grown-up social networks and questioning where your responsibilities to your friends – and their children – begin and end.

Megan’s weekly newspaper columns have never failed to provoke a reaction from readers, and we imagine the same may well happen when she talks to Queenstown writer Jane Bloomfield. Expect humour, a bit of naughtiness, and absolutely no tolerance for hypocrisy.

Queenstown Writers Festival (11 & 12 November 2023) brings together writers from across Aotearoa to discuss bold ideas and their latest literary work. This year's programme circles around the mysterious and morbid, and turns over the deeply personal act of memoir writing. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of these conversations.
