With a blend of dreamy acoustic duets, bluesy murder ballads and foot-stomping Folk, New Zealand-born and Nashville-based South for Winter’s sound is as eclectic as their origins. The band began with a chance meeting between kiwi Nick Stone and Colorado native Dani Cichon in the mountains of Peru, South America; however, it was years before the two were able to bring the project to life in Christchurch NZ. South for Winter later took flight in Nashville TN, where the two songwriters and multi-instrumentalists combined elements such as acoustic guitar, mandolin, electric guitar, and suitcase stomp into a genre-bending sound described by American Songwriter as “laden with delicate harmonies, intricate guitar-work and earthy vocals...impeccable”.
South for Winter recorded their debut album Luxumbra with grammy award-winning producer Matt Leigh in Nashville TN and successfully crowdfunded its independent release in 2020. The album has been praised by sites such as For the Love of Bands ("a wonderful mix of indie and folk rock"), Grateful Web ("eclectic in the best sense of the word"), AmericanaUK ("a journey well-worth taking"), Relix Magazine, and DittyTV. Luxumbra’s release, coupled with the band's head-turning live performance, has landed them accolades such as a rising local artist by Nashville's Lightning 100 Radio in 2018; "Most Wanted" Artist at Falcon Ridge Festival in 2019; Top Artist of the year by BuzzMusic in 2020; "Top DJ Pick" by NYC's John Platt in 2021; Official Showcase Artist at Folk Alliances International, Southwest Regional and Midwest Regional; and finally, Official Artist at SouthxSouthwest in Austin TX in 2023. Between tours nationally and internationally South for Winter are back in the studio in Nashville for their sophomore album, with Leigh again at the project's helm. The first album single is set to be released in tandem with a tour of New Zealand in Spring 2023.
