It is over 10 years since Grass Green Recordings unleashed its first release on the world.
Envisaged, primarily as a platform for three Auckland producers, the impact was immediate.
Reed & Radley built on the successes of their work for DiY Discs and Aotearoa’s pioneering Reliable Recordings, while Darren Clark cemented his reputation as one to watch.
As Shallow Taxi Club, Chris Reed and Paul Radley sneaked out a series of edits that found favour with the likes of Greg Wilson.
But it was as Monkey Boots that they enjoyed their biggest successes.
The Whitworth Strut EP was an instant classic, with follow-up Impossible Need hitting number one (all genres) on the influential Juno Download site and ending the year as one of the best-sellers.
And then, a break: Time to recharge and rest.
It wasn’t meant to be a long one - and plans were being hatched for a comeback when Covid struck.
That meant another delay but, finally, Grass Green returned at the tail end of 2022 as the foundation stone of a much bigger project to showcase the incredible talent in New Zealand.
As Chris Reed returned as Mono/Loco, Grass Green’s sister label Electric Orange launched with a doozy of a single from Hooky - AKA Tauranga legend Sean Murray.
Darren Clark weighed in with two incredible EPs for Grass Green - the Future Bound single going top 10 deep house on Juno. Reed & Radley’s Keen On hit number one (deep house) on the same site.
Then another label - Black Sands, a showcase for husband-and-wife DJ/production team nineteen79 AKA Bee and Ryan Tregurtha, who are quickly making a name with their innovative fusion of deep house, deep tech, minimal and progressive sounds.
Now a fourth imprint, Red Snapper, a vehicle for Murray to release - as Soul Foundation - the upfront House,Jackin House & Nu-Disco sounds that too fill the dance floors.
All four labels were named to capture elements of what makes Aotearoa an incredible place to be. From the sun to the sea, all are part of the Natural Rhythms whanau.
On May 20, we’d love you to celebrate what we’ve achieved so far and what’s to come.
The Natural Rhythms crew are passionate about creating a pathway for new artists - and forging connections with established names around the world.
There are further releases slated from Monkey Boots, nineteen79, Reed & Radley, Mono/Loco, Darren Clark and Chris Reed, plus EPs from up-and-coming talent and established DJs new to the studio.
At Ink on May 20, join us to mark the start of an exciting new chapter for Kiwi club music.
It will be a hell of a party - and all proceeds will go straight back to the label, ensuring we can keep on keeping on.
