Nātya

Nātya will explore the concept of Abhinaya (expressions) and techniques (adavu) from the repertoire of Bharatanatyam. This series of exploration will be performed by talented dancers from Natyaloka School of Indian Dance based in Ōtepoti. Nātya is being researched by Swaroopa Prameela Unni and the dancers will also be trained by Swaroopa. Nātya will showcase the history of Bharatanatyam repertoire, a dance form from South India known for its complex techniques.

The dancers will be portraying some of the Thillanas, Varnam, Kauthuvams and Shlokas from the repertoire (a sequence of fast paced techniques along with a short narrative).

The costumes and jewellery for Nātya is being sourced from India. Nātya will be an enthralling experience for the wider Dunedin community. Diversity of thoughts, ideas and identities will be displayed at the event paving ways towards oneness within the community of Ōtepoti.
