The great travelling opera singer Miss Cynthia Fortitude is booked to give a musical lecture for the inaugural meeting of NBOG (Nelson Bays Opera Guild). Her indefatigable accompanist, Miss Gertrude Rallentando has been called away unexpectedly, so Cynthia must battle on without her.

Laughs, gaffs and high jinks eschew! Join Helen Moulder (The Bicycle and the Butcher’s Daughter) as she presents the newest instalment of Cynthia’s musical (mis)adventures with music by Mozart, Haydn and Puccini.

Cynthia and Gertie Ride Again is a new solo show, featuring Helen Moulder as her world-famous opera singing character, Cynthia Fortitude. “I wanted to do something to honour the character of Gertie, Cynthia’s longsuffering accompanist,” Helen says. “My good friend, Rose Beauchamp, who played Gertie for 30 years, passed away in 2021, and I felt that her wonderful character of Gertie had to live on somehow. Hence this new show.”

Helen and Rose worked together for nearly 30 years, initially in the women’s comedy troupe, Hens’ Teeth, and then in the two shows they created – The Legend Returns and Cynthia and Gertie Go Baroque. The Legend Returns premiered at Circa Theatre as part of the 1998 Wellington Fringe Festival. The show then played at numerous festivals and theatres around NZ (courtesy Arts On Tour), with two return seasons at Circa, and an international season at Josie's Cabaret in San Francisco.

Cynthia and Gertie Go Baroque opened at The Dark Room in Palmerston North in 2016 and had a season at Circa Theatre in 2017. Both shows attracted glowing reviews! Cynthia and Gertie Ride Again is written by Helen Moulder, with Jeff Kingsford-Brown as dramaturg and director. “Nelson Fringe will be my first opportunity to present this show to an audience,” Helen says, “so I’ll be encouraging a post-show discussion!"

This is a staged presentation (in costume) followed by a feedback session to help Helen move onto the next stage.
The Legend Returns had its very first tryout performances at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts in 1997 before premiering at Wellington Fringe and returning to the Suter Theatre as part of the 1998 Nelson Arts Festival.
