Jukejoint was formed in late 2020 as a 4-piece band, playing electric Blues and old-school R&B, with a touch of Americana.
The line-up then was veteran Nelson musicians Nev Harris on bass, Denny Allen on drums and vocals, Paul Nickless on lead guitar and - newly arrived from the UK - Rich Luetchford on Blues harmonica. The Band’s musical inspiration came from such Blues legends as Jimmy Reed, Paul Butterfield, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, the Rolling Stones, Keb Mo and numerous others, and their Set List included all-time favourites 'Way Down in the Hole', 'Route 66', ‘Muskrat', 'Born in Chicago' and 'Mystery Train'.
In 2022 Jukejoint expanded to a 5-piece, with the arrival from Rotorua of Warren “Wozz” Houston on drums, and Denny moved briefly to keyboard and vocals. Then, hot on the heels of Wozz, the band gained another member - Hadyn Olsen on guitar - and they became a 6-piece band with Denny on lead vocals/percussion, though all six band members now shared vocals.
At the close of 2022 Nev Harris announced he was leaving the band and relocating to Australia. He will be sorely missed. In his place Jukejoint have been fortunate enough to gain another new band member - talented bass guitarist Murray Poulter.
Jukejoint have been playing gigs in the Nelson-Tasman region with a growing following, making regular appearances at The Boathouse, Golden Bear Brewing, The Riwaka Hotel, The Playhouse, Tasman Bay Blues Club and - more recently - Fairfield House.
For their first performance at Nelson Fringe Festival, Jukejoint have chosen their "Top Twenty" - selected songs from their Set List, covering 100 years of the Blues, from the 1920s to the 2020s; from Blind Blake to Sleepy John Estes, Muddy Waters to Junior Wells, Bo Diddley to Boz Scaggs! Joining Jukejoint especially for this performance, is rapidly rising young Nelson guitarist Luke Wilkes.
In the tradition of the original JukeJoints, there will be room to dance (the Band describes their music as “Jumpin’ Blues with maximum R&B”, so you’re really gonna want to get up there and shake your booty!). Note that the bar will remain open.
So come along - and see for yourselves how Jukejoint are keepin’ the Blues alive!
