Double bassist Nick Tipping features as guest soloist and composer at the Dunedin Jazz Club for the opening event of the 2023 Autumn Concert Series at Hanover Hall. Performing as a trio with club director Bill Martin on the keys and Carl Woodward on drums, Tipping will showcase a number of his original compositions, his signature improvisatory style, as well as a selection of jazz standards that bring out the depth, warmth and “thwang” of the double bass.

Nick Tipping is well known to the listening public through his curation of “Inside Out”, the weekly jazz show on RNZ. Tipping is champion of jazz made and performed in Aotearoa, a passion which stems from his Masters degree in jazz performance from UNLV in the USA and Ph D thesis on Wellington jazz in the contexts of New Zealand music and Global jazz. Tipping was also Head of Jazz at NZ School of Music from 2007-2011, bringing a wealth of performance experience and knowledge to the band stand.

Tipping combines excellence in performance and presentation. Nick is a frequent performer in Wellington and around New Zealand, in jazz, classical crossover, musical theatre and contemporary pop music. Nick has worked with groups as diverse as the Rodger Fox Big Band, the NZSO, the NZ String Quartet, and Grammy-winning jazz musicians Mike Stern and Kurt Elling. He toured the country with Chamber Music NZ in 2017 with his octet The Jac. Tipping has also performed with national and international stars such as Bic Runga and Kenny Burrell.

The warm acoustics and natural reverberation at Hanover Hall will provide the perfect stage for piano trio music. The musicians are looking forward to exploring some original music with freedom to improvise around the chord changes and the arrangements. Complimenting the funky sound of Tipping on the double bass will be Martin’s swinging touch on the keys and Woodward’s machine-like precision. This trio performed a brief set at the 2019 Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival and are keen to extend the combination with a full length concert performance.

Note: The Dunedin Jazz Club is a licensed venue with a cash bar.
