This oil portrait painting course will be an introduction using a traditional wet-into-wet [Alla Prima] oil painting technique. This is a unique opportunity to learn portraiture under one of New Zealand’s most notable and respected figurative artists. Beginning with copies of old master paintings and moving on to photographs students will be taught drawing techniques, quick colour studies, palette organisation, colour perception, tone, light, proportion, and anatomical structure.

As the oil portrait painting course progresses students will paint a long portrait. Individual feedback will focus on sensitivity to light and colour. Oil painting demonstrations are provided. The course is suitable for all levels, though some prior basic painting experience is preferable.

There will be opportunity to paint from life models as the course progresses and when the tutor assesses the skill building.

What students say about zarahn’s class:
Simon b. (august 2022)
My experience so far has been fantastic. Zarahn is an excellent instructor. As an artist of the highest calibre, his background is perfect to help me with the progression i was looking for. I’ve found it difficult to find classically trained artists who can mentor me in the style of work i want to do, and he fills that gap perfectly. His own work demonstrates his own mastery of technique superbly, and his quiet, knowledgeable tutoring works well for me with the right balance of demonstration and direction. I just wish i could spend more time in the studio with him.
