If you're marketing your business in New Zealand (or offering a marketing service) it's important that you understand your responsibilities under the NZ Advertising Standards.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the industry regulator for all advertising in New Zealand. They set the standards and run the complaints process, complementary to the legislation that restricts advertising.

It takes just one complaint on one of your social media posts to trigger the NZ Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) complaints process. By educating yourself on how to promote your business in a responsible way, you can avoid the ASA spotlight!

This event will focus on the Advertising Standards and how they apply to social media platforms.

The session will cover:

- The Advertising Standards Authority's definition of an advertisement
- Applying the ASA Codes (the standards) to advertising on social media
- Identifying social media ads
- Advertising risk areas e.g. alcohol, occasional food & beverage products and children, therapeutics & health
- User-Generated Content and the advertiser’s responsibility
- Using Influencers
- The importance of targeting tools
- Managing complaints to the ASA

The Presenter: Hilary Souter, Chief Executive - Advertising Standards Authority

Hilary Souter is the Chief Executive of the Advertising Standards Authority and has worked in the wider media industry on a range of issues to support responsible advertising for over 25 years. She manages code reviews for advertising for children and young people, alcohol, finance, gambling and therapeutic and health advertising, and runs the secretariat that annually processes over 1500 enquiries and complaints.

Hilary is a guest lecturer on advertising standards at New Zealand universities and gives regular presentations to both domestic and international audiences on the value of advertising self-regulation
