Have you ever wondered about the origins of pā Māori (fortified places)?

Today we can see the remains of terraces, ditches, banks and sometimes palisade walls in the landscape.

Each place has a history and is a physical manifestation of whakapapa (genealogies) of whānau and hapū. In this presentation, Zac McIvor will be discussing what we know about pā from kōrero tuku iho (oral histories) and archaeology to explain when and why they began to be constructed and how descendants relate to them today.

Zac has a background as a heritage and archaeological consultant and worked for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga as a Regional Archaeologist. He is currently a Archaeology programme lecturer at the University of Otago.
