Asian(sound)scapes X Ponsonby Social Presents: Phoebe Rings • Geoff Ong 王国豪

Phoebe Rings
After their debut show at Outsider Sounds Festival, the band has played full-house shows such as bFM’s Christmas party, Mermgrown, Elemental Nights, as well as 2022’s Nest Fest. In 2020, they released their dreamy single Cheshire which was one of bFM’s 10 most-played tracks of 2020, as well as No. 1 in various SRN and alternative charts.

This celestial band orbits around songwriter Crystal Choi (she/her), the rings as it were, consisting of the talented Benjamin Locke (he/him, Sea Views), Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent (he/him, Lucky Boy), and Alex Freer (he/him, A.C. Freazy). They released their debut EP in August 2021, and it was nominated for the Favourite EP / Mixtape Award at the Student Radio Network Awards in November.

Geoff Ong 王国豪
Geoff Ong 王国豪 wants to be a pop star for dorks. Pop music can feel lacking in authenticity and connection, especially for people who don’t always feel like they fit in with the cool kids. Geoff Ong wants to fix that. This is the mainstream, for the misfits. Over the last 4 years, Geoff has been building a career as an independent artist in New Zealand - cultivating a passionate fanbase through a combination of online engagement, electric live performances, and his own brand of quirky pop songwriting. With 5 songs from his 2020 debut album “Maybe It’ll Be Alright” landing in the Top 5 of the Official NZ Music Charts and consistent radio airplay across New Zealand's commercial hit music stations, it’s clear that there is big love for Geoff’s music. Geoff also feels strongly about the importance of racial diversity and representation in mainstream media; as one of the few Asian faces in the pop music sphere, Geoff feels a responsibility to create discussions around this.
