Join us at Whare Waka Café at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for a traditional bread-making experience.

A Māori traditional bread-making workshop during Matariki is a special opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of bread-making in the Māori tradition and celebrate the Matariki festival, which marks the Māori New Year. Matariki is a time when the Pleiades star cluster rises in the southern hemisphere and signals the start of a new year for Māori communities.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the cultural significance of bread-making in Māori tradition. Participants will learn about traditional Māori bread recipes that have been passed down through generations. These recipes may include varieties like rēwena bread, a fermented potato bread, and fry bread, which is a more modern style of traditional techniques.

You will learn the specific techniques involved in preparing the dough, shaping the bread, and baking it to perfection. The facilitator will guide them through each step and share insights about the cultural significance behind the techniques.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will take home a recipe card to make their own starter to make their own bread at home for their whanau to celebrate the spirit of Matariki together.
