Tūhura Otago Museum is proud to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week 2023!

Join us for our September Seniors' Meetup at the Museum. This month we have a free talk from Dunedin PhD graduate and historian, Claire Macindoe.

Claire will delve into her primary research of Dr H B Turbott – Dr Bloomfield’s 20th-century predecessor.

Following World War Two, awareness of mental health and wellbeing grew in importance for the medical profession. Stress was bad and nerves needed to be protected. The Department of Health grew increasingly aware of this as an area where the public needed education and support, but how to do it? Enter New Zealand’s first health communicator and disease-prevention expert, Dr Turbott. A well-known and respected radio personality from 1943 – 1984, he talked about health matters of concern to New Zealanders.

Using the popular ‘Radio Doctor’ broadcasts of Dr H B Turbott as a case study, we can examine how information about mental health and wellbeing was communicated to the public within mid-century New Zealand.

Come with friends, or make some new ones at the Museum.
