The stories of places: A literary approach to writing local histories with Dr Janine Irvine
Local history books share the stories of local places and their people. Dr Irvine will talk about how looking at local history books as life stories influences how we may research, write, and read these books. The talk will pose a series of critical questions for writers or would-be writers to reflect upon and offers practical suggestions for local history book projects, from the experiences of other writers and book projects.
There is a follow-up workshop on this topic on Sunday 1 October 10.30am-1pm.
About the speaker
Dr Janine Irvine is a collaborative storyteller, researcher and oral historian who writes the stories of peoples’ lives and explores connections to places and communities. In 2021 she published the findings and observations of her doctoral research, made available through the Auckland Library e-book collection. The Stories of Places: A literary approach to writing local histories is an easy-to-read and contemplative resource for writers of local history. Janine has also written a collection of personal, family, and local histories.
