This month’s show will be post Valentine’s Day, but you could treat your sweet to a ticket for the perfect cinematheque selection, Billy Wilder’s Some Like it Hot. Easily one of the most versatile directors of the 20th century, Billy Wilder (Sunset Blvd, Ace in the Hole, The Seven Year Itch, The Apartment) brings some of his favourite pals (Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon) to the big screen for what is one of the funniest, sexiest, and most risqué films of the 1950s.
Tony Curtis and Lemmon play two musicians on the run from Chicago’s nastiest mob members. They improvise a plan to dress as women, join an all-female jazz band, and escape to Florida. A big problem arises when Curtis falls for Monroe and has to shift back and forth between his female saxophonist persona and an all-new disguise as a millionaire yacht owner. Lemmon has other issues, particularly an old, Floridian millionaire that thinks he’s hot stuff. The fast-paced romantic comedy of errors that ensues is still hilarious in the 21st century and shockingly progressive in retrospect.

On the night of the 26th, take your love out for some local kai, maybe at Tui Brewery or Red Chillies, then bring them to Billy Wilder’s hilarious, romantic riot.
