Botanical art and illustration is a specialized field that combines scientific observation and artistic skills to depict plants and flowers with accuracy and aesthetic appeal. These artworks aim to capture the intricate details and unique characteristics of different plant species. Historically, botanical illustrations were used as documentation tools for scientific purposes, but today they also serve as beautiful pieces of art. Artists in this field use various techniques, such as watercolors, pen and ink, or colored pencils, to create realistic and visually pleasing representations of plants. Botanical art and illustration play a vital role in plant taxonomy, education, conservation, and the appreciation of botanical diversity.
The Botanicalists is a group of South Island amateur and professional artists, of which seven are represented in this exhibition.
