Join The Queen's Closet for this performance of glorious and decadent early French baroque music - and bring along your dancing shoes just in case!
The Queen's Closet’s period instrument Baroque Orchestra is unique in New Zealand—a fresh and contemporary ensemble based on cutting-edge scholarship of 17th century performance practices, including a vibrant and colourful complement of historic strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, and voices.
Throughout the programme we'll be contrasting the excitement of French military-style trumpet and timpani pieces with lush opera and ballet music, by Marais, Charpentier, Philidor, Jacquet de la Guerre, Desmarets and, of course, Lully. We'll be crowning the concert with Michel-Richard de Lalande's incredible Te Deum—a piece so sumptuous and ravishing you won't want to miss it!
The birthplace of the hoboy ('baroque oboe'), and with its unison 'dessus' trumpets, lilting style and florid ornamentation, French music of this era sounds like nothing else.
