Tokelau Language Week Celebration

Experience the Tokelauan language and culture at Tūhura Otago Museum!

As part of Tokelau Language Week, we'll be hosting exciting performances and talks to celebrate the culture of this South Pacific island group. There will also be a pop-up display of Tokelauan artefacts from the collection.

2014 Oceania wrestling champion Ilai Isopo Elekana Manū will be speaking about the revitalisation of fagatua, an indigenous form of wrestling in Tokelau. Ilai, who is of Tokelauan and Samoan descent, has written a book ('Fagatua Tokelau') about this traditional sport and is currently researching its health and wellbeing benefits as part of a PhD in Public Health.
