Join us for a talk by Lynley Hutton, President of the Wellington Shakespeare Society and Chair of Arts Access Aotearoa., exploring the 'whys about Shakespeare with a little background and possibly an impromptu performance.

Shakespeare died over 400 years ago, so why should we still be interested in his work today? Is he still relevant?

There are many more questions that can be asked about Shakespeare, including about his life - which we know very little about. Even though he is something of a mystery as a person, his work is well-known and loved around the world, as well as being the source of inspiration for many artists and influencing everyday speech. While acknowledging that Shakespeare may not appeal to everyone, there is still a lot than can be learned and appreciated in his plays and poetry.
Lynley Hutton
Lynley Hutton is a life-long learner and writer who is fascinated by the life of Shakespeare, or rather the lack of details about it. While Shakespeare’s work may provide some clues about him, we really don’t know much at all.

Lynley managed to not study Shakespeare as part of her English Literature degree and has been making up for it ever since. She is writing a fiction book that weaves together some New Zealand history and Shakespeare, and will be travelling to the UK and Europe soon to complete the background research for the book. Her initial research for the book was pre-COVID and included walking the Camino, reading a Shakespeare play a day.

Currently Lynley is the President of the Wellington Shakespeare Society, and Chair of Arts Access Aotearoa. She is passionate about learning and making the arts accessible to everyone.
