Don't miss this one-off opportunity to be introduced to the musical tradition from Bali, Gong Kebyar

You'll learn about the instruments, how the music is put together and you'll play the instruments, including the most fantastic deep and resonant gong.

The workshop will be led by experienced members of Gamelan Taniwha Jaya – the Balinese gamelan housed at NZSM, brought to NZ by Gareth Farr.

Balinese gong kebyar is a fast-paced exciting musical ensemble, one of many across Indonesia. The ensemble features beautiful deep gongs, shimmering bronze percussion instruments intentionally tuned slightly apart in pairs to create a beating sound pulse, and rapid interlocking patterns.

If you like it, there's the opportunity to join the group and work towards a concert later in the year.
