Learn basic pattern-cutting and fashion design skills to create clothes that fit!
Ideal for self-designers, aspiring industry professionals and the home sewer.

Create in a unique and fun environment with similarly passionate designers who range from beginners to more advanced students. Learn the art of pattern drafting to create your very own 'slow fashion'.
Using professional trade knowledge, beginners will learn to draft and fit basic block patterns for themselves with simplified sewing and fashion applications offered. Students will commence with creating a skirt block pattern.

Clothes are fitted to the individual, allowing students to create and design their desired style using their individually fitted pattern blocks while learning easy-fit sewing and design techniques. Students can then use these techniques for either the self or others.

Students will progress to create the trouser block and then the bodice and sleeve blocks over various class sessions (as required by the individual). Depending on progress, for example, a student may finish the skirt and half a trouser block in one class session. Booking another class to continue the growth of their pattern knowledge over several classes.

Let the fun of designing your personal wardrobe or that next runway show truly begin! Sign up today!

Note: Slow fashion is the opposite of fast fashion. It encompasses an awareness and approach to fashion that considers the processes and resources required to make clothing. It advocates for buying and or making better-quality garments that will last longer and values fair treatment of people, animals, and the planet along the way.
Slow fashion focuses on reducing consumption and production. Making clothes that fit you that you have designed and love, means you will have long lasting wardrobe staples that you will always return too!

Your tutor: Larisse Hall. A visual artist, Larisse shares her 20 year fashion industry experience to give you the industry 'cheat techniques to make your sewing experience more simple'. Larisse has tutored patterns at NMIT since 2015. Larisse uses her pattern and fabric knowledge daily in her art practise, to shape and form her 3-D light infused, time transformative works of art. Endorsing slow fashion, she also makes and designs for herself when wanting to add to her wardrobe (loving the quality of pure natural fabrics that she has sourced from various suppliers, including vintage and fabric shops alike, occasionally also repurposing a blanket or crocheted shawl, etc)
Her organic approach to life supports the whakatauki: 'Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua' / 'Care for the land, care the people, so we may go forward'

Please note: Course cost $270
Materials, including 4mtr calico and 3.5mtrs pattern card $25

What previous students say:
"I have sewn for over 40 years, using store-bought patterns, often disappointed with the end result. These classes, which one can join, when requiring help on any project, have opened the doors for me to express myself my way while giving me loads of confidence and new skills. I would recommend to anyone, whether you have never sewn or always sewn."
"The pattern-making course is well-designed. It uses the close-knit class and Larisse's vast knowledge to create an inspiring and supportive learning environment. I only wish I could attend a class every week!"
"I'm amazed that I've actually learned to design my own clothes, and I wasn't even a sewer when I signed up!"
