Does the dog die?

Animals in pop culture are beloved and polarising. They can have us rooting for them, terrify us, and break our hearts. Join writer Pip Adam, whose award-winning novel The New Animals included creatures of both land and sea, and actor and stuntman Allan Henry, who played the titular Cocaine Bear in the 2023 movie. Adam and Henry will be discussing how their own work intersects with the themes of Good Bones, in which artist Michele Beevors presents life-sized sculptures of knitted animals, each with a tragic backstory. Delve into why we often have more compassion for animals than humans, and find out whether Adam and Henry think all dogs go to heaven.

Pip Adam is a Tauiwi, Pākehā, Tangata Tiriti, Queer writer. Her 2017 novel The New Animals (Te Herenga Waka University Press, 2023) is interested in the human as animal. One of it's main characters is a dog called Doug. In the climax of the novel one of the human characters goes hunting with Doug through suburban Tāmaki Makaurau. Pip has published five books each one shaped by Pip's veganism and the animals she's known.

Born and raised in Patea, Taranaki, Allan Henry has been involved in Film and TV since 2007. A regular performer for WētāFX as well as many international productions, Allan has a large catalogue of work. He was most recently "seen" as the titular character of Cokey in Cocaine Bear, and King Kong in Godzilla Vs Kong as well as Both Kong and Skar King in the recent Godzilla x Kong movie. Allan has spent the last few years as both performer and movement coach for projects such as The Planet of the Apes Trilogy, The BFG, Justice league, and the Avengers to name a few. Allan has a great love of movement, performance and teaching across all ages.
