Portrait of a Marriage is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Jeffrey Harris, the works date from 1971 and 1972.
'One evening I decided to go out to the cottage in Seacliff. As I approached it
I saw there was a light on in the window. I knocked on the door and Joanna opened it. We
decided to get married the next week, which we did in Port Chalmers. After the party at Jim and
Naomi Wilson's house, Ralph Hotere drove us out to our cottage in Seacliff. Life then was more or
less domestic bliss. I drew and painted Joanna and she painted me. It was an idyllic time. My
anxieties and tensions disappeared. The cottage right next to the railway line rocked with every
passing of a train and the many frogs in the pond next to the house croaked away every evening.
But after a time my ambitions to be better know as a painter made me suggest moving to
Wellington. The idyll was over. No more would I paint Joanna or anybody else from life. All the
lovely drawings of Joanna reading, playing chess or lying In bed ill or asleep came to an end.'
This exhibition is Jeffrey Harris' fifth at Brett McDowell Gallery.
