Award-winning writer and broadcaster Karyn Hay launches her new literary podcast in conversation with celebrated writer Steve Braunias.

Karyn Hay launches her new podcast, Writer’s Notebook live at Q Theatre in conversation with fellow writer, award-winning author Steve Braunias.

Karyn Hay (ONZM) is a beloved NZ writer and broadcaster who became a fixture in NZ households while hosting Radio with Pictures in the 80s, before a storied career at Radio Hauraki, Radio Live, Radio New Zealand. Hay was the inaugural Chair of Women in Film and Television’s Auckland chapter, is a Frank Sargeson Fellow and was awarded Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to broadcasting and the music industry in 2020.

Steve Braunias is one of NZ’s most-read writers, as a staff writer for the NZ Herald and literary editor of Newsroom, and has served as the Books Editor at The Listener and editor of The Spinoff review of books. He has won over 40 national awards for writing, notably a Qantas Fellowship at the NZ Qantas Media Awards (Print) and was awarded fellowships at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

These two first met in the early 1980s when he was a young reporter for Wellington music rag, In Touch, and she was the new host of the TV music show Radio With Pictures. Steve was tasked with interviewing her over a slightly uncomfortable lunch in the Avalon Studios cafeteria (as she remembers it). Their paths haven’t properly crossed again until now, despite them both being Frank Sargeson Fellows and acclaimed writers in their own right.

Karyn Hay turns the tables and talks to Steve Braunias about the craft of writing, the highs and the lows, the fact and the fiction, and whether his reputation as a bit of a hellraiser really does precede him. Don’t miss what promises to be a lively conversation between contemporaries, across the table from each other again, after 40 plus years.

The Writer's Notebook with Karyn Hay is part of PodFest at Q, which is part of the Summer at Q festival. Check out more about PodFest here: https://www.qtheatre.co.nz/shows/podfest-q
