Dive into a day of giveback to our environment as part of the Papakura Stream Restoration Project!

Join us in the ongoing restoration of the Papakura Stream, a 63km freshwater river facing significant environmental challenges. Once surrounded by indigenous forests and kahikatea swamps, this stream has seen the loss of most of it’s natural forest due to agricultural, industrial and urban developments. Today, the stream is dealing with the modern problems of litter, dumping and other man-made pollutants. Luckily, a team of amazing people have been working hard to restore the mauri (lifeforce) of this important awa, and have been bringing community together to collect data, clean up litter and plant natives along it’s banks and reserves.

The Big Clean Up: Conservation Volunteers New Zealand, Sustainable Coastlines and the Beautification Trust have teamed up to present “The Big Clean Up” at 72 Trimdon Street. This Reserve has direct access to the stream and has a public access way that is struggling with litter, weeds, graffiti and water pollutants.

Activities for the day:
- Litter Clean Up: Grab your gloves and help us remove as much litter as we can from the environment
- Weedbusting: Unleash your green thumb and rid the area of invasive plants, letting our native flora thrive.
- Water Quality Testing: Put your science hat on and discover the stream’s health and the fascinating macroinvertebrates within.
- Litter Transect: Uncover what’s floating downstream and needs our attention.
- Graffiti Removal: Restore vibrancy to the public walkway along this stream by painting out graffiti, keeping this space inviting and safe for people to enjoy.

Sausage Sizzle Celebration: After a day of hard mahi (work), recharge with a mouth-watering sausage sizzle – veggie options available.

Community Power Unleashed: This huge effort is made possible by the generous funding from Papakura, Manurewa, and Franklin Local Boards, with unwavering support from Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters Team.

Be a Hero for Nature: Mark your calendar, gather your friends and family, and join us for a day of fun, fulfilment, and eco-action! Together, let’s ensure the Papakura Stream stays beautiful for generations to come.

This event is part of EcoFest, an annual month-long festival taking place Friday 15 March – Sunday 14 April 2024. Inspiring climate action across Tāmaki Makaurau, it is hosted in collaboration by EcoMatters, Kaipātiki Project, Beautification Trust and Waiheke Resources Trust, and proudly supported by Auckland Council.
