Prepare to embark on an unparalleled journey at the stunning Public Trust Hall with Māreikura Lumina: A Celestial Symphony of Sound, Light, and Culture — a captivating display that marries the ethereal artistry of music, projections, and the magic of Māori culture and creativity.
This performance brings together the musical talents of Kirsten Te Rito (Ngāti Kahungunu, Romgomaiwahine, Rongowhakaata) and her sensational 8-piece band to revisit her Wellington Jazz Festival commissioned composition Māreikura, inspired by Atua Wāhine — Māori Ancestral Goddesses. The music will be paired with stunning light projections and artwork by multi-disciplinary artist Jamie Berry (Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Ngati Porou, Ngā Puhi).
The show features some of Aotearoa's most highly regarded musicians including Taonga Pūoro artist Ruby Solly, pianist James Illingworth, drummer Darren Mathiassen, bassist Johnny Lawrence, drummer and percussionist Cory Champion, guitarist Tyna Keelan and vocalists Lisa Tomlins and Moana Leota.
As the lights dim and the music begins, the audience will be transported to a realm where astral legends meet contemporary beats. This show promises not just entertainment, but a transformative cultural experience that will linger in the hearts and minds of all who attend.
