Masters of Light & Sound

Join the New Zealand String Quartet at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts for a special evening at Rembrandt Remastered. Surrounded by this remarkable collection of digitally remastered and life-size paintings, the NZSQ will play a programme of works inspired by one of the world’s greatest painters of all time. Tickets include a pre-concert talk, 50-minutes of music, a glass of wine on entry and entry to the exhibition.

Before each concert, enjoy a pre-concert talk by the curator of Rembrandt Remastered, Dr. Erin Griffey.

Dr. Erin Griffey is the Head of Art History at The University of Auckland. She is an international authority on seventeenth-century portraiture and patronage, especially Dutch, Flemish and British art. She specialised in Netherlandish art for her postgraduate work at the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where she did extensive work on Rembrandt for both her MA and PhD. She is the foremost specialist on Rembrandt in Australasia, having taught a full-year Honours paper on Rembrandt for the last 13 years at The University of Auckland and supervised two PhDs and numerous MA theses and Honours dissertations on various aspects of Rembrandt's work. She has spoken about Rembrandt at conferences, symposia and public lectures in Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Amsterdam, Venice and London, and published on aspects of Rembrandt's self-portraits. She has published widely on Netherlandish and British art, and has a book coming out this autumn with Yale University Press.

THE MUSIC
Featuring music by Shostakovich, Haydn, Bartok and Debussy, the ‘Masters of Light & Sound’ programme has been carefully curated by the New Zealand String Quartet to respond to some of Rembrandt’s greatest works. Immerse yourself in an evening filled with the exquisite craft of both visual and auditory masters.

THE EXHIBITION
Rembrandt Remastered is an exhibition that gives an amazing overview of Rembrandt’s most beautiful works through this unique collection of life-sized paintings.

In collaboration with the Rembrandt Research Project Foundation and Professor van de Wetering, the Rembrandt Remastered Exhibition that toured New Zealand in 2015/16 is coming back to Wellington in 2024.

Using the latest techniques and the inexhaustible knowledge of Professor Ernst van de Wetering, all the works are digitally restored to their original condition as they may have left Rembrandt’s studio.

The paintings are the same size as the originals and displayed to provide an overview of the life and oeuvre of the great painter.

An ode to the Dutch master. Rembrandt made 330 paintings in his life and they are now scattered over the world, currently spread over 18 countries. 52 pieces are inaccessible to the public for various reasons, for example the paintings are in private possession, stolen or in long-term restoration.
