One of the most anticipated annual events on the Wellington choral calendar is fast approaching - the May Workshop! Every year over a hundred singers make their way to Wellington to learn and perform a large piece of classical music in the space of a day and half. This year’s piece is one that is truly like nothing else: Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. This “Little Solemn Mass” is renowned for being anything but that description - it’s instead humorous, dramatic, lavish, and over 75 minutes long!
Originally scored for 2 pianos, a harmonium and a small choir, it’s now performed by everything from community chamber groups to full professional symphonic choruses! Singers and audiences alike love the soaring melodies, the complex counterpoint, the heart-wrenching arias and the exciting finales. Rossini’s first love of opera shines through in every bar.
Directing this year’s May Workshop is Wellington conductor and educator Isaac Stone, who described this work as “my absolute favourite”. Isaac is well-known locally for his innovative chamber choir Supertonic, and nationally for directing the Tawa College Blue Notes choir, which has been awarded Gold at the Big Sing National Finale for the last 3 competitions. Isaac has a reputation for fast-paced and fun rehearsals, with an educational emphasis on quality singing technique.
Rehearsal times will be from 7pm on Friday 3 May and then again from 9:30am to 5pm on Saturday 4 May. This will be followed by a concert open to the public at 7:30pm on the Saturday evening.
