Overshadowed Art: Women artists in the Auckland's art scene, 1930-1989

This presentation will consider where women were positioned in the Auckland art scene and how this changed and developed from the early 1930s up until the late 1980s. The nature of the twentieth century often situated men such as John Weeks or Colin McCahon to be the drivers of art history in Auckland, often at the expense of marginalising the influence of women artists. As we shall see, many women kept the art scene lively and innovative and I elevate the stories of these Auckland women and acknowledge their contributions. In many ways, they were just as important as their male counterparts in developing a nationalist identity early on, and then in later decades by engaging with social and political issues through their works.

Unstable Ground: Growing, Selling, and Discrimination in Auckland 1890-1920s

This presentation explores the contributions made by various migrant groups who worked the land in Auckland from the 1890s-1920s with the connected context of discriminatory regulations. It discusses how resilience and community were formed along occupational and cultural lines and explores continuity and change.

Mt Eden Prison - A Site of Reform

Hidden behind the bleak conditions of Mt Eden Prison, lies individuals and organisations that sought to change it for the better. From its opening in 1856 until the 21st century, Mt Eden Prison has seen a range of people working to improve the lives of inmates in and beyond the prison walls.
