Nelson Clay Week

Please note the team firing schedule will need to be organised once numbers have been confirmed. Please let the team know if you have other workshops booked. -- Embark on a journey of discovery in this workshop, where participants will delve into the art of loading and firing a wood-kiln. Over the course of five days, explore the intricacies of kiln loading, discussing techniques for optimising flame flow and kiln performance. Following this, engage in a three-day, two-night firing process, learning to harness the unique qualities of flashed, ashed, and flame-smothered pottery.
Participants are required to bring the equivalent of two banana boxes worth of bisqued high fire stoneware or porcelain. Participants should bring suitable firing attire, long sleeve/ pants in natural materials only ie cotton, linen, wool. Strictly no polyester fabrics.
Darryl has been a full-time potter/sculptor since the late 1980s. He grew up in Leigh and travelled to Nelson to study at NMIT in 1989, majoring in ceramics. He has been working as a full-time sculptor/potter ever since. His distinctive style of Anagama wood firing has gained him national and international recognition, as well as several awards, including a Diploma of Honour from Korea. He has also pursued his passion for large-scale multi-media sculpture works, many of which can be found throughout New Zealand in public and private collections, including the Wallace Arts Trust.
