Ever wondered what lies just beneath the reach of scuba divers? The mesophotic zone. If you’re interested in diving, marine biology, or oceanic environments, join this George Mason Charitable Trust lunchtime talk with marine biologist Professor James J. Bell, to learn more about his explorations within this ‘world between worlds’ beneath the surface of our moana here in Aotearoa.

The mesophotic, or middle light zone has only recently been recognised to support many unique biological communities. Recent advances in technology have provided access to mesophotic ecosystems never before possible. Professor Bell and his research team have been the first to properly explore these unique ecosystems across Aotearoa New Zealand. This talk will introduce the amazing communities we find in the mesophotic zone around our coastline and explain why they are important and in need of further protections.

Thursday 9 May, 12.30pm – 1.30pm
Taranaki Research Centre, Puke Ariki Library Level 2
