Whangaehu Lahar Volcanic Floods Hike 2024

Discover the volcanic history of Mt Ruapehu on this off-track hike from Tukino Village down the Whangaehu Valley to the Rangipo Desert.
Look at paths from the 1995 and 2007 lahar activity down the Whangaehu, the ancient Rangipo mega lahars, and the Bund (man-made barrier).

Minimum Age: 10 years
Max Participants: 30
Meeting Place: Start of Tukino Rd (just off SH1) Transport: Own 4WD or high clearance with carpooling for those who don’t have access to them.

Grade: 4 - Advanced tramping track

Participants are asked to bring:
- Waterproof and windproof clothing
- Tramping boots
- Sunglasses/sunscreen/hat
- Gloves and warm hat
- Lunch, snacks and drink
- Personal first aid kit
- Personal medication
- Camera (optional)

Please note: the trip leader reserves the right to refuse anyone who is insufficiently equipped.
