About the Maara Kai

A 1.6 acre paddock located in the heart of Manurewa next to Manurewa High School and adjacent to Manukau Super Clinic is being transformed into a community and educational urban farm. Plans for the garden include an education garden, a productive market garden, a healing rongoa garden, a food forest, a worm farm and a community garden with communal and allotment areas to provide wholesome and nutritious food to the Manurewa community. This large community garden will nurture the community surrounding it, and be based on biodynamic, organic and Maatauranga Maaori practices, including rongoa (healing) and traditional Maaori planting practices, guided by Maramataka (the Maaori lunar calendar).

This event is part of EcoFest, an annual month-long festival taking place Friday 15 March – Sunday 14 April 2024. Inspiring climate action across Tāmaki Makaurau, it is hosted in collaboration by EcoMatters, Kaipātiki Project, Beautification Trust and Waiheke Resources Trust, and proudly supported by Auckland Council.
