New Zealand’s busiest (and laziest) performers revealed

Hey everyone. Here at Eventfinder HQ, we often marvel at all the cool events going through the site. And it’s no surprise that there are some artists that pop up quite often... but who really hits the road the most?

To answer that question, our senior developer Greg knocked back a large coffee and trawled the database. He looked at events listed since January 1 this year, to find how many shows each artist or band had performed.

One excel spreadsheet later, his data reveals... NZ’s hardest working musical performers!

Turns out that classical music lovers can rejoice. Topping the list was the Auckland Philharmonia, with 57 performances this year. Beethoven may be dead, but his sound is alive and well.

While reggae music is relaxed, the bands who play it are super hard working. Second on our list was Hikoikoi, with 47 shows. And incredibly, 1814, Cornerstone Roots, House of Shem and Katchafire took out the next four places... each with more than 36 shows! Wellington based celt-country band In Like Flynn also cracked the 36 show mark.

Two of NZ’s favourite songstresses have been spending a lot of time on the road. Jess Chambers (34 shows) just pipped Anika Moa (33) although Anika’s upcoming solo tour will catapult her into second place by years end... with a staggering 50+ shows. Go girl.

Other notables high up the rankings included Dave Dobbyn (31), Opshop (29), Dane Rumble (26), Fat Freddy’s Drop (22), Che Fu (22), The Feelers (21), and Concord Dawn (20).

Hard working kiwi favourites The Black Seeds put in another solid year. They deserve special mention for membership in the very exclusive 100-plus club, when we looked at another measure - total number of shows listed in the last four years. Maybe a trophy is in order.

At the other end of the scale, Wellington legends The Warratahs have had a quiet year, with only one event listed. Excellent but elusive rock band The Tutts also manage just one show. They might like to use the time to update their Myspace page, which touts their debut album as “out now”... still technically true, even though it was released back in 2008.

Other artists with relaxed schedules include Cut Off Your Hands, Bang! Bang! Eche!, Th’Dudes, Midge Marsden, Goodnight Nurse and Supergroove, although several of these bands have been busy entertaining overseas audiences.

Motocade have also performed less this year, but with excellent excuse... they’ve been locked in their studio recording a new album, which is due out soon.

We had a lot of fun making this list, so we think we’ll make it a more regular thing. Get your touring boots on, artists... and don’t forget to list your event. Every point counts!

Note: While we have the most complete database of events in New Zealand, some events (particularly festivals) may not have been tagged with all their relevant artists. So it's not 100% accurate. However we think it's close enough to have a little chuckle about! In the future, we'll be improving this data into the definitive record... we'll let you know when that happens.
