A remote spot on the Napier--Taupō road, Tarawera was first a Māori village, then a military stockade and an important coach stop. Author Katherine Mansfield -- then aged 19 -- spent a night in Tarawera in 1907, and enjoyed bathing in the nearby hot springs.
