The Museum is housed in a disused and upgraded school building. The Museum tells the historical story of the area from the early Whalers, goldmining, fishing, sawmilling, stone quarrying to present day farming. It also has an interesting farm machinery display.
Situated on the South Catlins Heritage Trail in the hamlet of Waikawa, it is set in garden surrounds with picnic areas and tables available for visitors. Recommended by North & South magazine as being a well set out museum and worth a visit.
A good display of historically relevant photographs and genealogy research available upon request.
