A night of First Encounters

Nau mai, haere mai, join the Ātea a Rangi crew for an informal casual night in a heated marquee to celebrate the Winter Solstice, the time of Matariki, the Māori new year.

Discover the history of the first voyaging waka to this area and hear about the first encounters between Māori and European. Taste the traditional kai from those times 250 years ago.

Programme includes:
Story telling
Historic kōrero by the Ātea a Rangi Trust.
Kai by the whānau of Hapī Clean Kai Co-op

The night ends with a guided tour of the whetū at the star compass by the team who designed and carved the Ātea.
(weather permitting, please dress appropriately)

Proceeds go to future school education programmes at the Waitangi Regional Park
