Back to Classic - Chamber Music Series

Come for an enchanting afternoon to hear the Mozart Oboe quartet and other hidden gems of Classical music featuring Ashleigh Mowbray associate principal Oboe player of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra with the Tres Cordes trio.

Ashleigh Mowbray - Oboe
Originally from Christchurch, in 2013 Ashleigh Mowbray graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Classical Performance from the New Zealand School of Music where she studied with Robert Orr. She spent the next two years studying at the University of Tasmania on a full Orchestral Scholarship. Here she completed a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in Orchestral Performance, under the excellent tutelage of David Nuttall.

While in Australia Ashleigh enjoyed playing with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as well as the TSO Baroque Ensemble. She has worked as both oboist and cor anglais with various orchestras around New Zealand including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington. Ashleigh was a cor anglais soloist with the Wellington Chamber Orchestra and spent four years working as oboist and cor anglais for the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band.

In 2016 Ashleigh returned to Christchurch and after completing her Masters at the University of Canterbury was awarded the Associate Principal Oboe position with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Tres Cordes Trio
Tres Cordes string trio has been performing together since 2007, and are all members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra; Cathy Irons (violin), Sharon Baylis (viola) and Tomas Hurnik (cello). The trio has a passion for chamber music which they have shared with audiences around New Zealand as well as broadcasting live on CTV in 2009. In 2013 they toured for Chamber Music NZ, and their playing was described as “high spirited” and “fun overflowing,” “with splendid co-ordination and attack.” by the Rotorua Daily Post. They were invited to the Nelson Composers Workshop in 2011, to perform and work alongside young NZ composers. The trio commissioned and premiered Anthony Ritchie's Easter Melancholy alongside artist Nathanael Provis' stunning large oil landscape paintings for a opening exhibition. Members of the group have performed as a string quartet in Tokyo at the NZ Embassy and their first CD “String Trio Sapphires” was broadcast on Plains FM in 2012 and Radio New Zealand Concert as the competition CD of the week in 2011. In 2015, they recorded the music for The Art of Recovery for the New Zealand International Film Festival and performed for the opening of the Chinese Spring Festival. Tres Cordes performed at the 2017 XXXIX Festival Internacional de Musica de Deia in Marjorca, Spain.
