A unique opportunity to experience the traditional and contemporary folk music and dance of Hungary, presented by a group of Hungarian artists who won the prestigious and popular Hungarian television folk music and dance competition Felszallott a Pava...

Dancers Istvan Berecz, Matyas Fodor, Kristof Fundak are accompanied by musicians Balint Zsombor, Adam Kiss-Balbinat.

Their programme gives life to the rich culture and centuries-old folk traditions of Hungary and the wider geographical region, the Carpathian Basin. A lifetime would be too short to present such a large collection that has been passed down from generation to generation when it was still a live tradition strongly embedded in the daily lives of the village people. Thanks to the invaluable recordings of Kodaly, Bartok and Gyorgy Martin on phonographs and early tapes, these traditional dances and music can be reconstructed for contemporary audiences. Thanks also to a handful of artists who dedicate their lives promoting the art form, such as those featured in this show, there is renewed interest in authentic folk music and dance house tradition in Hungary.

In this showcase the audience will be entertained by the vigour, energy and outstanding execution of the dances and also touched by their intimate beauty.

Also joining the guest performers on stage is the Auckland Hungarian Dance group along with Marton Biro and Anna Dora Lazar, professional dancers and recipients of the Korosi Csoma Scholarship who spent the last 7 months in New Zealand teaching, dancing, helping to strengthen the identity of diaspora Hungarian communities.

This event is sponsored by the Auckland Hungarian Club. The audience is welcome to stay after the performance in the foyer/bar area to meet and talk with the artists
