Nature is essential for New Zealanders’ wellbeing – it underpins our economic prosperity, is at the heart of Te Ao Māori, and is at the core of our national identity and international brand.

Biological diversity, or ‘biodiversity’ for short, describes the variety of all biological life – plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms – the genes they contain and the ecosystems on land or in water where they live. It is the diversity of life on earth.

The Department of Conservation is undertaking consultation for a new national strategy for biodiversity that will be in place from 2020. The new Biodiversity Strategy will set a vision and guide biodiversity management work for the next 50 years.

Earlier this year we asked iwi, interest groups, specialists and others their aspirations for our nature and what would help achieve them. We used their input to develop a discussion document Te Koiroa o te Koiora. It that sets out what we heard about the importance of nature, and tests some proposals for the new Biodiversity Strategy such as a vision, framework and outcomes.

Now we want to hear what you think.

In each workshop we will explore a future vision for nature and how we can get there. We will hear from leading local biodiversity practitioners and forward thinkers about local and regional approaches that help us see together what the future could look like.

Come along and contribute your thoughts and ideas for the future of biodiversity in New Zealand.

This event is part of the Department of Conservation's 2019 consultation on a new Biodiversity Strategy for New Zealand.
