The NZSM Symphonic band will present a number of works especially written for wind band. This is the second year the band has had a residency at the NZSM after last years success at the National Concert Band Festival where it won the trophy ‘best performance of a work by any band’. The programme combines the schools classical wind, brass and percussion students for an enjoyable evening of music. The concert includes two standard repertoire items for wind band, Holst’s First Suite for Military Band and the exquisite version of Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli.

The ensemble will also present two New Zealand premieres by New Zealand composers. Ken Wilson’s Suite for Band, which was actually written in 1966 but has not been performed in NZ, is a five movement suite that is quirky and challenging! Lastly, the band will present Rarájipari written by NZSM alumni, André Nowicki. This work is fast and furious, capturing the love of running by the Tarahumara people of north-western Mexico. The performance will also include the NZSM Saxophone Quartet performing the first ever quartet for saxophones by J.B Singlee.
