Taylor-Jensen Gallery are proud to be hosting the first public exhibition of works by Raukura, a group of local weavers who work with harakeke (flax). Raukura formed earlier this year with the aim of showcasing the beauty of nga mahi a te whare pora (the work within the house of weaving) by creating beautiful and thought-provoking pieces.

The exhibition will include a wide range of artworks, with the artists showcasing works that express their artistic journey with our natural plant resources. Expect to see creative use of colour and technical mastery from this group, who include weavers with work in national and international collections, both public and private. The art of weaving continues to evolve, with the artists retaining customary practices to create both customary and contemporary artworks.

Raukura are all graduates from Te Wananga o Aotearoa, with two of the group having Masters degrees from Massey University. The group are united in their passion for working with various natural resources and the arts of weaving: whiri, whatu and raranga.

Come along to Taylor-Jensen Gallery in George St, up the steps by the library, from 2nd November until the 24 November 2019.
