Most people take the short way home but not Rebecca Wardell.
From Lausanne in Switzerland to her home in Lake Hawea, New Zealand, Rebecca has chosen The Long Way Home pedalling through 19 countries in just under a year.
Come and welcome Rebecca to the Mountain Biking Capital of the World when she arrives in Rotorua on Friday March 15th.
Programme: Video plus talk, Q and A session Rebecca will show her video of 20,000km riding more than 900 hours on her bike and climbing the equivalent of 11 Mt Everests. Her personal challenge has allowed her to ride at a pace to immerse herself in the local culture raising money for the Forward Foundation (www.forwardfoundation.co.nz).
As a former NZ Commonwealth and Olympic athlete, Rebecca knows just how fundamental encouragement and support is as a young athlete, hence her chosen charity, Forward Foundation,
which aims to increase the participation of high school aged NZ girls in sport.
She’s battled head winds, desert 40 deg. plus temperatures, snow, ice, torrential rain, steep hills and
deep mud. She’s dodged camels, goats and trucks and gained personal knowledge of Iran’s medical
system after a crash.
Longest day: 170km Shortest day: 35km (pushing bike through sand in Tajikistan)
It’s a story worth hearing. All welcome.
If you’re keen to come please give us an indication of numbers by Wednesday, March 13th to robyn.cowley@xtra.co.nz or for further information.
